چکیده

A technique was developed for algal toxicity assays. Algal communities obtained from several sewage treatment plants and surface waters were the test specimens. The toxicant used was zinc acetate The techniques that were developed are relatively simple, rapid, and precise. Algal responses to toxicants were measured by changes in oxygen production, and two types of responses were observed. The variations in response are caused primarily by the degree of prior acclimation of the algae to the toxicant. Reference: Wang, Wuncheng. An Algal Assay Technique for Aquatic Toxicants. An algal toxicity database of organic toxicants derived by a closed-system technique.

The current study presents the toxicity data of 90 organic compounds with various modes of actions to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The assessment was conducted using a closed-system technique, and a biomass-type end point based on the cell density was employed. The above toxicity data were compared with test results from ciliate (Tetrahymena pyriformis), water flea (Daphnia magna), fish (Pi...

A Comprehensive GC–MS Sub-Microscale Assay for Fatty Acids and its Applications

Fatty acid analysis is essential to a broad range of applications including those associated with the nascent algal biofuel and algal bioproduct industries. Current fatty acid profiling methods require lengthy, sequential extraction and transesterification steps necessitating significant quantities of analyte. We report the development of a rapid, microscale, single-step, in situ protocol for G...

Toxicity of chlorophenols to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata under air-tight test environment.

A closed-system algal toxicity test with no headspace was applied to evaluate the toxicity of chlorophenols to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The dissolved oxygen production and the growth rate based on cell density were the response endpoints. Phenol and seven chlorophenols were tested using the above test technique. Median effective concentrations (EC50) range from 0.004 to 25.93 mg/l (base...

Estimating low-toxic-effect concentrations in closed-system algal toxicity tests.

The no-observed-effect concentrations (NOEC) and EC(10) values for 108 organic compounds were estimated, using multiple endpoints (i.e., biopopulation, growth rate, and dissolved oxygen production), from previous data obtained by a closed-system algal toxicity test (test alga: Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata). These low-toxic-effect concentrations are valuable to risk assessment of chemicals an...

A novel marine algal toxicity bioassay based on sporulation inhibition in the green macroalga Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta).

A 5-day aquatic toxicity test based on sporulation inhibition of the green macroalga Ulva pertusa Kjellman has been developed. Optimal test conditions determined for photon irradiance, salinity and temperature were 60-200 micromol photons m(-2)s(-1), 25-35 per thousand and 15-20 degrees C, respectively. Tests were conducted by exposing U. pertusa thallus disks to a reference toxicant (sodium do...
